Arabanızı Kardan Temizlemek için Eldivenli Buz Kazıyıcı Yapımı - How to Make a Snow / Ice Scraper Mitt

Üstü karla kaplanmış arabanıza ulaşınca eldivenlerinizi evde unuttuğunuzu farkediyorsunuz, buz kazıyıcıyı soğuktan kızarmış ellerle tutup ön camı temizlemeye razı oluyorsunuz değil mi? Olmayın! :)

You realize that you have left your gloves back at home when you reach your snow covered car and settle for a cold and painful little adventure with your ice scraper and bare, red, sore hands, don't you? Well, don't! :)

NERDEN ÇIKTI?
Geçen hafta kar Ankara’ya ulaştı. 10 yıl olacak neredeyse Ankara’ya taşınalı, her türlü sefilliğini yaşadım, arabayla kaydım, vasıta bulamayıp saatlerce yürüdüm, işe defalarca geç kaldım, gidemedim, tatil oldu diye sevinemedim çünkü eve dönemedim, ofiste mahsur kaldım, evde mahsur kaldım, avm’de mahsur kaldım, doğalgazsız kaldım, kontör yüklemeye gidemedim… Tea-light mumlarla ısınmaya çalışırken evi yakıyordum bir seferinde (o mumları bitişik nizam çoklu yakmayın yuğrum, parafin alev alıyor! Yemek masasının üstünde kamp ateşi gördü bu gözler!)

Soğuktan ve soğuğun getirdiği tüm sefillikten tiksiniyorum, evet. Ve fakat hala içimdeki kar görmüş İzmirli yaşıyor. Her kar yağışında aynı edepsiz sevinç...

THE INSPIRATION IS…
The snow finally made it to Ankara last week. It was about ten years ago that I moved to this cold snowy city with its continental climate (Alaska, anyone?), leaving the ever-so-sunny İzmir (weather-wise, California). Since then I went through all kinds of misery the snowy weather has to offer, lost control of my car over the thick ice layers, walked for hours for no other means of transportation was available, been late for work gazillions of times, couldn’t make it to the office, couldn’t make it back home, got stuck at the office, got stuck at home, got stuck at malls, ran out of gas in weathers that made it impossible to leave home to get more. Tried to warm up with tea-light candles’ flame, almost burned down the house (do NOT attempt to light them close together people, kerosene lights up! I’ve witnessed a bonfire on my dining table!)

I hate cold and all the misery it brings about, yes. Yet that Smyrnian girl inside me still does secret cheerful air punches when she sees cute white snowflakes floating. I am sensible enough to be ashamed of my teenage euphoria so I am careful to raise my eyebrows and murmur “Snow? Again?!” followed by an attempt at a facepalm that reeks of hypocrisy for the sake of those grown-ups who get all worried about the torture the snow is about the inflict on us. Yet I love love love it!

Something else I love love love is himself, you know. As of this week his mornings of agony, trying to clean the car of the excess snow has begun. Hands all sore and red, snow filling up his sleeves, very VERY unpleasant… I press my face to the windows and make faces I hope he finds funny, yet I knew I had to do something real to help his war against terror weather! Then I remembered this snow sleeve I saw at someone’s car. I remembered thinking “I could totally make it!”. Just wanted to share in case some himselves and herselves out there may want to give a try to keep their hands warm and cars clean.

Yumuşak Kumaş Yatak Başı Yapımı – How to Make a Soft Upholstered DIY Headboard

ÖNCE - SONRA
BEFORE - AFTER

THE INSPIRATION IS…
You know the phase when the lectures in a graduate program are completed and the only remaining part is the actual writing of the thesis; however the student does not initially realize that the thesis will not write itself and she’ll have to study day and night to get it completed in the last few months? Well I was in that hapless state of mind when it happened. I went back home and hated the adolescent monstrosity I called “my room” before I left for college years ago. I had to go for a major makeover. After all, I had all the time in the world; the thesis would eventually work out!

Needless to say, I also had the luxury of cuddling up with a book. Yet that headboard, that hard, spiky headboard, which kept pushing my cerebellum with its weird height, which kept crashing into my skull with its ridiculous ornamented profile ranked number one in my makeover list. Anyway, shouldn’t a headboard be all pillowy and cuddlesome? What is wrong with people who make hard wooden headboards anyway?

I had to raise the headboard and make it soft and headworthy, but I had to keep the old headboard in place for I-cannot-harm-furniture-full-stop! So came to be this Laura Ashley-style beauty…

Her sonbahar keskin hatları olmayan, yuvarlacık kenarlı, bembeyaz Ege evlerini; mavi cam boncuktan halhalları ve saçlarımdaki deniz tuzunu arkamda bırakamayıp depresyon bulutumu baş tacı yapasım geliyor.

The night of 12.24.2011. Mind you, it's an original photo! ^^

İki kişi-üç kişi derken yatak odasının penceresinin önünde bütün ev ahalisi hayran hayran (as opposed to aval aval!) gecenin köründe, yılbaşı temalı bir kartpostalı andırmaya başlayan görüntüye kilitlenmiş, durup dururken sevgi ve umutla ilgili iç açıcı düşüncelere dalmıştı (bi çeşit “öpüjem” state of mind!).

Everyone has their antiques. Mine, among many, is a soft spot for themes and thematic holidays.

Every Autumn I get depressed, for I cannot let go of white Aegean houses with round edges, anklets made of blue glass beads and the fresh iodine scent in my hair easily. I feel sorry for my doomed suntan and highlights moving down my hair length to their inevitable end. I hate winter and all the misery Ankara’s never-ending snow has to offer. But I just LOVE Christmas time. Maybe I should move down to Australia to have my cake and eat it too! : )

Not many among my friends share my anomaly. Yet by a stroke of luck, I had very dear friends over on last Christmas Eve. One was visiting from New York, the other from İstanbul, and we had mulled wine and apple pie, not to mention the ginormous Christmas tree and the best fake crackling fireplace ever. After the traditional heart warming movie ended with the obligatory cliché of “It’s a Christmas miracle!” bottom line, everyone went to bed and the house kept glowing with the dim lights of the twinkling Christmas tree.

Warm with the lightness of being among dear dear friends –and the wine, indeed– I was getting ready for bed. That’s when I realized that the first snow of the season was falling beneath the street light and the giant pine trees across my window. Make no mistake: they were HUGE snowflakes! While I was watching it snow, awe-struck and humbled by its beauty, I felt another fan approaching behind me, then another woke up to the echoes of our enamored murmurs in my small apartment, then another until everyone was standing in front of the window, which by now resembled a Christmas postcard, so peaceful in the dead of the night. It WAS a Christmas miracle, afterall…

NERDEN ÇIKTI?
Her yerdeler. Fiyatları 26,90 TL ile 62,50 TL arasında değişiyor. Neden bilmiyorum.

THE INSPIRATION IS...
They’re everywhere. Their prices vary between 14.99 $ and 49,99 $. I don’t know the exact reason. Could be an indicator of some secret monopolistic market behavior. But they’re all Christmas-themed and they’re all made of fleece. None are in sizes that suit anything but themselves and none are pillowcases only with no filling, thus taking up a LOT of wardrobe space when the holiday is over.

I wanted a solution for holiday themed sofa pillows that take up minimal stocking space, in colors that suit my current theme and in sizes that suit my sofa. Well I could sew pillowcases to existing pillows with fleece and felt, and save myself the money and way more precious wardrobe space. Man, do I love DIY!
