Mirror Mirror on the Wall - The Little Mermaid

NERDEN ÇIKTI?

1989 Sonbaharı… Karşıyaka’dayız. Babamla…

THE INSPIRATION IS...

Autumn 1989... Dad and I are walking the streets of Karşıyaka (that’s in İzmir, Turkey), hurrying to the Deniz Cinema. As soon as we get in the building he rushes to get popcorn and I stand amazed at the gigantic pictures of Laurel and Hardy on the walls. Either they are huge, or I am too small. Nope, not a chance, I’m four and a half, I’m a big kid. The fact that the cinema and I share the same name gives me an absurd sense of pride.  We get in the theater. Lights go off and I get scared. But I can’t bring myself to show it. The love of my life is beside me, I try to hide the thrill and act like I, four -and a half!- year old Deniz, go to movies every other day, sit in dark movie halls eating –whatsit-again- popcorn, cooly! Then the movie begins. Yes, I am a cartoon fan, yes I have loads of beta cassettes back at home, but this is something different altogether. I watch the little mermaid on the screen breathless and saucer-eyed… The pride for my name grows (see, ‘Deniz’ means the sea in Turkish), it doesn’t occur to me that it could be ordinary : ) That day marks two important beginnings: the father-daughter cinema rituals –we still keep the good ones for each other– and my favourite Disney heroine – I think I am a mermaid all through my childhood… :)

In the next few months I’ll be decorating an apartment just for myself for the first time. Every space I’ve ever touched always needed a degree of consensus, some sort of agreement, the worry of reflecting the common character… From the second I realized that I’m gonna live in my own space I can’t stop grinning each time I remember the freedom of using a theme which reflects me and me only! So the inspiration is my search for ways to better reflect my personal taste. It’s the heirlooms I’ve got from grandma like this ornamental frame. It’s those beautiful cobalt glass candle holders in IKEA. It’s the amazing mermaid paintings of Victor Nizovtsev that I loved so much and thought to myself if me having a favorite painter means I have grown up. I’m not sure of the exact combination but the inspiration is a mix of all those.
